OSAKA MANSUN
AUSTIN, TX
Restaurant Review by Master Dragon on 07/06/2011
Restaurant Overview
Nestled away in a little strip center in North Austin, Osaka has been overlooked by me for years. With Kobe around the corner and Midori across the street I never gave Osaka a chance. While swimming and having a few beers on a beautiful Saturday in Austin, the cravings for sushi hit me hard. Master Dragon and I grabbed our stuff and headed out. Having just moved to this side of town John turned to me and asked where to go. The pressure was on as I ran through the list of places in my head and decided to take a chance on Osaka. One of the best chances I think I have ever taken. A few evenings later I returned ready for more.
Restaurant Atmosphere:
“Irashaimase!!” Like the sign on the front of the building, the inside is quaint but very neat and welcoming. The center tables are sectioned off with bamboo dividers and the bar in the back open and inviting. I took what is now going to be my usual table and began looking around to see what everyone else was eating. Everything looks amazing and I doubt you could make a wrong choice! The restaurant is super clean and even at my late arrival is well lit but not over the top.
Service and Hospitality:
The service was great. Getting in so late I actually had low expectations but the Osaka staff surprised me. Everyone was friendly, prompt and happy to help answer any questions or offer suggestions.
Nigiri Sushi From The Menu:
Salmon Toro, Super White Tuna, Himachi, and Peppered Tuna
While I didn’t see anyone else enjoying nigiri, the dishes and rolls I did see looked amazing! The cuts were absolutely beautiful and the presentation was simple yet to the point. The ratio of rice to sushi was spot on allowing the flavors and textures of the pieces to balance in perfect harmony. While I am not a huge Salmon Nigiri fan, the Salmon Toro was quite nice as was the Himachi. The big winners for me were the Super White Tuna and the Peppered Tuna. The Super White had a little roasted garlic on top that gave a nice surprise crunch and added that wonderful roasted garlic flavor that just made the delicate tuna POP! The Peppered Tuna is simply amazing and has become a must order on every future trip.
Sushi Rolls From The Menu:
Osaka Mansun All Rolled Up
I am sad that I let this gem sit unknown for so long. Osaka Mansun is now at the top of my must hit spots when doing sushi in North West Austin. Their menu offers mainstays for the sushi aficionados, basics for the beginners, and a wide variety of choices for all. I HIGHLY recommend you do not pass up Osaka when you are in the area. --Guest Review by: Master Floating Hammer
